Client story: Penzance Dry Dock – successful acquisition

“In early 2021 I became aware that the operators of the dry dock facility in Penzance were planning on closing down the dock. With family connections to this historically significant dock (opened in 1834, it was one of the first of its kind in Europe) and my own marine engineering background, I realised I could be in a position to do something to keep the dock running, although I was also aware I would need significant help to make it happen.

Andrew Tapson came highly recommended from someone in my professional network. Upon being appointed, Andrew devised, negotiated and executed an acquisition strategy that, in July 2021, resulted in the successful transfer of the remaining operations at the facility, a new long term commercial lease and a significant funding line. The dry dock and the 10 jobs it supported was saved from closure, creating an opportunity to re-establish Penzance as a marine engineering centre of excellence.

It’s no understatement to say that this deal would not have been completed without Andrew’s input. His knowledge and experience of corporate acquisitions, and commitment to working with the various parties and their legal teams ensured that a successful outcome was achieved."

Client story: Trevethan Gin – creating Organisational Fitness

Trevethan Gin approached Perle for help with raising the funding required to meet growth aspirations in the medium term (5 years). At that time the business was being led by an operationally-focused founder with external support from accountants and a sales specialist. By the team’s own admission, there was little routine reporting and decision-making was ad hoc.

Andrew created the conditions for Organisational Fitness, crucial for attracting investment and ensuring best use of the funds, putting together:

  • A 5-year financial plan and a reworked business plan that linked to the financial plan. Supporting the client growth story in a logical format, the business plan was designed so it met the needs of both the business and investors (lending itself to being adapted into a 15-slide investment deck)
  • A risk table to increase understanding of the various areas that needed additional focus
  • A table of current year initiatives with timescales and responsibilities allocated
  • A reporting structure, including a regular monthly meeting where the key functions – sales, operations and finance – each delivered a concise report on the month just completed and looked 3-6 months ahead.
  • As a result of becoming organisationally fit, Trevethan is now investment-ready, equipped with much-needed clarity and ongoing access to meaningful data to maintain its growth trajectory. The reporting structures and board meetings are now an established way of being able to spot opportunities and meet challenges before they become problems.

    Exit Planning
    All our services ultimately support whatever end game you have in mind for your business. Although it may seem counter-intuitive, it’s never too early to be thinking about and planning for an exit, in the same way that it’s never too early to be working with a Finance Director. Exiting a business whether that’s via a trade sale, winding down or implementing an employee ownership scheme is a complex undertaking, involving a multitude of legal, operational and financial issues. Having completed many business sales successfully, we’re able to guide you through every aspect of devising and implementing an exit strategy while ensuring you’re able to maintain optimal day-to-day operations once the process begins.
